Date/Time: January 17th, 2:00 pm
Topic/Skill: Listening
Teacher Presentation: Mr. Flemming started class with a discussion on what they remembered from the previous class and asked a few questions about the topic they were learning about (oceanography), as well as vocabulary. After gaining their attention back to the topic, the goal of the class was to understand the topic better by listening to a podcast while reading the transcript and then having a discussion about it, answering questions about the main idea and structure, and finally any new vocabulary. He spent a lot of time having the students figure out the new vocabulary and idea of the story through context, not through the use of Google.
Classroom Management: Mr. Flemming moved all around the room and made use of the room. He never sat down, but instead walked around and discussed with each group. He always gave time for the students to answer questions and helped them with aids when they were unsure.
Materials: Canvas, podcast, Google, dictionary, whiteboard, textbooks
Student Participation: Students answered questions, took notes, asked questions, and had a lot of group discussions (with partners and with the whole class).
Feedback Provided: Mr. Flemming gave live feedback during the discussion, making sure students spoke correctly. He also made sure not to directly give out answers or corrections, instead he would pull up the dictionary or images on Google, or use context to get the students to think about their mistakes and questions.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: A good ESL/EFL teacher is one who is very comfortable in the classroom and with their students, but also very welcoming and engaging. The teacher should ensure that the atmosphere is welcoming and pleasant, while also serving as a space for challenges and personal improvement from the moment students enter to when they leave.
