Date/Time: January 24th, 1 pm
Topic/Skill: Speaking, Group 2
Teacher Presentation: Dr. Felicia Ciappetta had a small class of 3 students meet for a laid-back, yet productive class session. Dr. Felicia started the class with conversation and then led into the class period. She had the students use the whole session to work on their presentations. The students asked each other questions and she would listen and help with any questions or errors.
Classroom Management: Dr. Felicia Ciappetta mostly remained in her seat and listened to the students interacting and working.
Materials: Computer/phone
Student Participation: Students were largely responsible for classroom engagement. They were running the entire session through their conversations, questions, and their work.
Feedback Provided: As the students were asking questions and talking, Dr. Felicia encouraged them to correct their own sentences if they were formed wrong and use context to understand vocabulary.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: A good ESL/EFL teacher prioritizes the students and the atmosphere he/she is in charge of fostering. Dr. Felicia did this extremely well and in a way that honestly shocked me. She really shows an interest in each and every student and gets to know them and help them on a personal level. To help the students, she recorded herself speaking and giving out information to send to them on whatsapp about their presentation and the setup of their stories so they could listen and remember and understand (talking about thesis and structure). She also sent vocabulary words that they didn't know or understand to the students, and then connected it to their native language to better understand (sent on WhatsApp and looked up meanings or connections to China for example).
