Topic/Skill: Needs assessment and conversation about each other (get to know you activities) 


Feedback provided to tutee: I welcomed Aras because he just moved here less than 2 weeks ago and congratulated him on his proficiency with English. He spoke really well and surprised me a lot. He needs help with grammar tenses and vocabulary, as well as working on his accent. Overall it was a very good session and corrections were occasionally made.  


Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I had learned a lot about him and his country. I was surprised that even though he just moved here he knew a lot of English and spoke very well. I was also surprised by myself because I think I have familiarized myself with internationals and understanding their accents with English, because he told me nobody can understand him here… yet I could understand everything he said. A big lesson I think I learned today was speech rate, since I understood him so clearly I assumed it was reciprocated and forgot that I was speaking at a level a native would speak.

He told me about his visit to the Museum of Natural History, the Empire State Building, and Central Park. His hometown is known for its chaotic traffic, and New York’s heavy traffic also reminded him of home. When he told me he had taken the subway rather than a car to commute during his stay, I mentioned how cool that seems as I have never been on a subway. He was shocked!
