Topic/Skill: Grammar, Group 3 (Intermediate)
Teacher Presentation: Dr. Felicia Ciappetta had the small class of 4 students meet at the nearby Starbucks for a more laid-back class session. Dr. Felicia had the students start with pairing up and planning a hypothetical graduation event that would occur next week from 1pm-5pm. The students were requested to tell Dr. Felicia what the party guests would be doing at each of the 30-minute intervals. This activity was meant to help them practice the future continuous tense. She then explained how the activity included future continuous and elaborated that the tense explains something happening "at a specific time in the future". Dr. Felicia then went on to go through practice sentences with the students by prompting them with questions of which the responses would elicit a particular verb tense. As the students worked through them, she encouraged them to make necessary adjustments until they were correct.
Classroom Management: Dr. Felicia Ciappetta mostly remained in her seat and prompted the students to do activities that had them practicing grammar rules in speech.
Materials: Computer/phone, notebook and pencil
Student Participation: Students were largely responsible for classroom engagement. They partook in the activities the instructor led. Dr. Felicia prompted them to do most of the work and give most of the answers to encourage them to practice grammar rules in real conversation. She also made sure all students had an equal amount of opportunities to engage.
Feedback Provided: As the pairs went through and described their plans, Dr. Felicia encouraged them to talk in complete sentences, correct their own sentences if they were formed wrong, and correct students' sentences if they could not come to the correction on their own.
Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: A good ESL/EFL teacher prioritizes grammar in use beyond just understanding grammar rules "on paper". They also make an effort to have students practice in realistic circumstances as well as connect lessons to their own interests and life experiences.
