Date/Time: January 24th, 1:00 pm

Topic/Skill: Speaking, Group 3 (Intermediate)

Teacher Presentation: Instructor Olivia James began the class by giving feedback to students regarding their presentations. Students also workshopped presentations with themselves and their fellow classmates. Instructor James also worked through technical difficulties with students. She then passed out rubrics for the students to see and better understand her expectations. There was time for one student to present. This student's presentation was about international students' transition to academic life in the United States. She went into detail about feeling overwhelmed, and financial struggles/motivations, and connected these to real-life experiences. These topics related to the other students in the class as they, too, had difficulties with these things as well as with learning the language of the country. This open-door discussion lent itself to further discussion of things such as culture shock. All the international students shared their surprise at how early places closed here in the U.S. compared to how late things opened in their home countries, especially for things such as meals.

Classroom Management: The students did a good job engaging with each other and the teacher for feedback and improvement on their presentations. When the student was giving their presentation, their colleagues were attentive and eager to engage in discussion.

Materials: Google, projector, computer, books, rubric

Student Participation: Students were happy to receive feedback as well as give others feedback. They were also comfortable with chiming in to add to the discussion and share their personal experiences and how those related to the topic.

Feedback Provided: Instructor James gave feedback on all aspects of the student's presentation including wording, visuals, information given, etc. She encouraged students to do their best and correct the way they communicated their points.

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: A good ESL/EFL teacher encourages deeper/further discussion. They also promote feedback from all levels including fellow colleagues and teachers alike to allow for as much improvement and varied perspectives as possible.
