Topic/Skill: To help him better understand how to speak and listen to English, I reviewed the parts of speech with Do-Jun Kim. I felt as though understanding the pieces of an English sentence would be productive for him to learn/reestablish the concepts and be able to use those parts in a sentence more effeciently.
Feedback provided to tutee: I challenged him to recall what the parts of speech were. If he couldn't remember, I went through it and elaborated on each one giving him examples. I also prompted him to come up with more examples or practice using them in sentences. I noticed that a few of the things he struggled with included understanding nouns, choosing the best prepositions, using complete sentences, and understanding what form of a verb to use. The feedback I gave included having him work on recognizing nouns and describing them. I also gave him better alternative prepositions for the examples we went through and I restated a few of the sentences he spoke emphasising the recommended correction. I went ahead and shared the slides I made with him and suggested he might go through them to review and practice.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I recognized that he did understand or was at least a little bit familiar with some of the parts of speech. However, going through them was proven to be a useful exercise as he feels it will help him better understand and speak English going forward. It is also useful to connect those parts to things in his life such as what he had done with his family the past week. I think it would be best to elaborate further on the more challanging parts of speech going forward. I might do this by sprinkling those in with practices and review of other English related subjects so that he can gradually refine his knowledge and skill on things like using prepositions and adverbs.
