Location: Hecht House basement

Topic/Skill: Fatimah and I worked together to help her better understand a list of vocabulary words she had to know and be able to use for a quiz in her speaking class. We first went through the list of words and I used more simple (high-frequency) words to help explain the term's meaning and to help build on her receptive vocabulary.

Feedback provided to tutee: I encouraged her to think of ways to use the words in different contexts. I encouraged her to repeat the correct pronunciation of the vocabulary words until she was better at saying them on her own. I also prompted her to try using the vocabulary in sentences to evaluate her understanding of the word. I corrected her on pronunciations and verb tenses she used. I went through the different verb tenses of the verbs that were on her list to make sure she understood how to use the terms while speaking about the past, present, and future tenses. I tried my best to relate the vocabulary to things in her personal life. If I noticed that she still struggled to understand the term, I tried my best to use synonyms to better her comprehension of the word.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: While helping Fatimah review and understand the vocabulary words, I noticed that my expectations of her level of understanding and her actual level of understanding were quite different. It was hard to know what words and terms she was already familiar with that I could also use to better her understanding. Constantly asking things like "Are you familiar with that term?" and "Do you understand that?" helped me figure out what words were best to use with Fatimah. This is why it is also important to make your tutee comfortable and create an environment that encourages them to be honest about what they do and do not know so that we as tutors can better help them learn.
