Date/Time: January 29th, 4pm

Location: Hecht House basement

Topic/Skill: Fatimah and I worked together to help her better use vocabulary words she had to know and be able to use for a quiz in her speaking class. After reviewing and bettering her understanding of the words, I encouraged her to be able to use the words in a sentence with minimal to no guidance from myself to transfer the terms into her productive vocabulary.

Feedback provided to tutee: We went through and polished her pronunciation of the words. If she struggled greatly, we found ways to sound out the word and create more broken-down and easier-to-understand groups of letters that helped her better understand the pronunciation. I gave her extra notes as well, breaking down potential sentence structures/formulas for sentences in which one may use words like culmination, iconic, etc. I then challenged her to create a couple of sentences wherein she would use the vocab. I gave her feedback on the form, organization, and accuracy of the sentences she created as well as the pronunciation of the words she used. I also prompted her to change the sentence according to different contexts such as if the sentence referred to the past, present, future, habitual actions, etc to test her knowledge and understanding of how to use the different verb tenses. I made sure to compliment her when she used a vocabulary word correctly or pronounced something right to encourage her.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Pronunciation is a difficult thing to teach. I find it is important to go beyond just having the student repeat the word and instead help them find a way to make the pronunciation "make sense" to them. It is important to keep lessons and explanations as simple and steadily-paced as possible to avoid overwhelming or frustrating the student. One should pay special attention to the student's prior knowledge and unique effective ways of learning so that they may alter lessons so that they work as best as possible for the student's specific needs.
