Topic/Skill: Fatimah and I worked together to prepare her for reading and summarizing a research article. We focused primarily on understanding what a literary review is, how to identify it within an article, how to comprehend it, and how she might go about summarizing the section.

Feedback provided to tutee: I gave her a plethora of tips such as the tactic of using [command + f] to help her search for keywords throughout the article. We worked together to come to the understanding that the "literary review" referred to a collection of sources that relate to a topic and which one could use to help build on and support theories, methods, and research gaps that can be applied to the thesis of a research project. I went through the "inclusion criteria" the authors included for the sources used in the article. I guided her in building her comprehension of vocabulary within this section which was significant to the article and review study. I challenged her understanding of these key points and if she misunderstood or just didn't know what something meant, I corrected her and elaborated on the term until she was able to comprehend the point we were going over.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I found that it is hard to know how to help Fatimah understand something that I had a hard time wrapping my head around. When it comes to analyzing advanced material, I found it helpful to show her how she might be able to understand things on her own such as by looking up unfamiliar vocabulary and trying to understand the sentence using context. I found it useful to share my first-hand experience with research and learn about her own experiences with creating research papers. I used this knowledge to better work towards filling in gaps and to help her understand the standards of using sources in research papers as well as citing those sources.
