Lillie CO #2
Date/time: January 24, 2024. 11:00-11:50am
Topic/skill: Olivia James, reading class, group 2 level, vocabulary + article reading
Teacher presentation: Begins by opening the weekly class Google Doc where all students wrote sentences for homework, using the vocabulary words of the week defined on an earlier page in the doc. They review the homework sentences as a group warm-up; She highlights proper/correct sentences in green and asks them to correct unhighlighted sentences aloud/together. Here, she pays attention to plural ‘s’, capitals for names, and punctuation (mostly periods). Review and revise for the first 20 minutes, then independent study for 5 minutes. The quiz is on Canvas, the same list of 10 words they've been practicing. Question 1 was a matching word to the definition. The second question is to write a sentence with each term, just like the homework and warm-up revision. Their study time they spent memorizing their homework answers.
Classroom management: review for 20 minutes as a whole, study for 5, then quiz time
Student participation: the students were revising in the Google Doc in real-time. Working together to help their neighbor figure out what is wrong with their sentence.
Feedback provided:
Teacher realizes she needs to review capital letters when they cap “Am”, “Business”, and “Vulnerable.” Helped the Korean student say vulnerable by telling her to bite first syllable.
English is adjective, noun. Arabic and French are the reverse… 'Parent’s attention' vs 'attention of the parents' (eng v fre)
She constructs sentences "Okay give me a subject, then a verb",,, the student replied “We are”
Materials: VOAreading website ~learningenglish.voalearning.com (often reading levels 2 and 3,, a little difficult for group 2, so make it high interest. On target for group 3.)
