Adelyn TS #13

Date/Time: February 5th, 5 pm

Location: Hecht House

Topic/Skill: During this second part of the session, Aras and I discussed what idioms are, watched an episode of Modern Family, and completed a worksheet/comprehension check. We went over idioms like: I am feeling under the weather,I see her once in a blue moon, It’s raining cats and dogs, Pull yourself together man! He said he has heard some of them before but never understood that it didn't really mean that. We then watched the episode, took notes, and observed new phrases or slang, and then I had him answer a few multiple choice, matching, and then a short recap.

Feedback provided to tutee: Instead of going over idioms and connecting what we have learned with writing a paper or an interview scenario, we watched an episode and then went over vocabulary, idioms and phrases found, slang, and then he completed a worksheet of comprehension questions. I did not have to give much feedback, just had to help him get his wheels turning and thinking.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I used a different approach because he seems to learn and enjoy learning the language more when there is a video and it is not so grammar or language based. He is able to comprehend and interact with the language a lot more when it is not as class scenario like.
