Kelsey TS #11
Date/Time: February 4th, 8pm
Location: Online (Zoom)
Topic/Skill: During this session, Jewon Lee and I reviewed nouns by looking at them in sentences. I also went over how to pronounce the 'qu' letter combination and built up his understanding of the determiners: a/an, few, some, many, and all.
Feedback provided to tutee: I reviewed what a noun was and challenged him to determine whether something was a person, place, or thing. I provided feedback as to whether or not he got it right. It seemed as though he mostly understood. The main thing I commented on was his pronunciation of "place" which he seemed to struggle with. I encouraged him to repeat it to better his ability to pronounce it. I also encouraged him to try pronouncing 'qu' words with the sound 'kw', providing translations for the vocabulary he might have been unfamiliar with. I over annunciated as I went through the words with him and encouraged him to say words piece-by-piece until he was better able to pronounce the 'qu' words. For the determiners I went over with him, I prompted him to choose which one would be best for a given situation. When he gave the correct answer, I complimented his good work and explained why it was good to use. I gave other viable alternatives and explained how people might use different ones depending on their own perspective.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I used "fill-in-the-blank" activities which I have found to be quite helpful for beginners who are starting out knowing very little English. It's been a good way to help Jewon Lee focus on strengthening his knowledge and skill of knowing and using specific things and working his way toward comprehending the wider picture of the language.
