Kelsey TS #12

Date/Time: February 6th, 8:30am

Location: Online (Zoom)

Topic/Skill: In this session, Dojun Kim and I discussed concepts regarding speaking English casually and went over abbreviations, contractions, and common expressions as well as how to use them in sentences.

Feedback provided to tutee: When going over small talk, he made a connection to company culture and how "water cooler talk" can occur in breakrooms. I challenged him to create sentences using contractions. I corrected him on any errors he made in these examples and gave him both variations of the sentence so he understood what the contraction was. For the expressions, I gave him examples after explaining and corrected any misunderstandings he may have had after we went through them together.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Dojun Kim seems eager to learn and I find it useful to give him opportunities to talk and share. This way, the "lesson" becomes more of a discussion which prompts more engagement and results in both "teacher" and "student" having fun while learning. Plus, I have appreciated getting to know him more through our sessions. It has made me realize that it is important to see tutees/students as more than just a quota to fill or the means to achieve a goal. By seeing them as complex individuals, the lessons can be more personable and you as the teacher can learn more, too.
