Kelsey TS #13
Date/Time: February 6th, 8pm
Location: Online (Zoom)
Topic/Skill: During this session, I introduced Jewon Lee to prepositions and worked towards building his understanding and use of some of the more common ones.
Feedback provided to tutee: After introducing prepositions to him, I went through pictures representing particular prepositions and challenged him to decide which would be best for the given situations. I validated his correct responses and worked through explaining the ones he did not quite understand. I also pointed out that, for some situations, a handful of alternatives would also be appropriate. I went through a story that used vocab we had gone through together and challenged him to find prepositions in the sentences. This helped me determine which ones he understood and which he needed further explanation on. Also, when he mistook another word or part of speech for a preposition, I explained how it differed from being a preposition. I encouraged him to look at parts of words that could give clues as to whether it was a preposition or what it meant (I.e. outside and out, in and in front).
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: As it is difficult to tell just how much a student actually understands, two very important things to think about are pacing and practicing. Going slower can be helpful in giving the tutee time to think. Even if they are not able to answer a question, giving them space to think can be encouraging and even just trying to get to the answer on their own can show progress. It's important to be extra patient and forgiving and one can always fall back on practice, practice, practice until they are able to get to the answer on their own. Any small step is cause for celebration.
