Location: Hecht House basement
Topic/Skill: Fatimah and I continued working together to review and revise a paper she had written using feedback given to her by Dr. Kennell. In this hour, we focused on revising paragraphs 4-5.
Feedback provided to tutee: I helped Fatimah understand what Dr. Kennell had suggested and guided her on expanding and elaborating on things she had introduced in the paper. Together, we went through the prompts required for the paper to ensure she had included everything necessary. We went through the paper as a whole to review the flow and organization. I talked about how it is beneficial to connect ideas and think about cause-and-effect or chain connections to help better the flow and make points made in the paper feel less random. I also complemented her creative and dynamic writing in some of the phrases.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that essay flow and organization is a difficult thing to teach and a difficult thing for international students to comprehend. Explaining it and putting it in terms that I understand might help them be able to achieve it on their own. I think about organization as connecting ideas and flow as making things easy for the reader to understand and taking out unnecessary words and phrases. Conveying these concepts to the student can help them work to better their writing.
