Topic/Skill: During this session, I introduced adjectives and worked toward bettering his understanding of them through analyzing one of his favorite songs, "Believer" by Imagine Dragons. I also challenged Jewon Lee to find adjectives, prepositions, nouns, and verbs throughout the verses of the song to strengthen his comprehension of those parts of speech and how they function in English sentences.
Feedback provided to tutee: As Jewon Lee struggled to find adjectives, I encouraged him to think about the different things adjectives help describe by giving him categories such as age, emotional state, appearance, color, size, etc. along with the Korean translation of those different words in case they were new to him. When he mistook an article as a preposition, I corrected him and clarified what an article is and how it was different from a preposition. I did my best to explain what certain prepositions mean and gave alternative choices for each of the four things I asked him to look for; nouns, adjectives, prepositions, and verbs. When he gave a good answer for one, I validated his response and, when he struggled, I helped him along the way to find the correct answer and gave an explanation.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I was not sure how familiar he was with the English version of the song, so as a precaution, I first had him watch a video with the Korean version and then I had him listen to the English version in a video that included written lyrics. I found this to be a helpful warm-up for him. While I did not expect him to understand the English version completely, I wanted to use something he was familiar with and enjoyed to help him better understand the aspects of the English language I was trying to teach him. I also explained to him that it is okay if he does not understand the song completely as knowing the different parts can help him better understand the material as a whole. In this way, I found the bottom-up process to be the best method for teaching him.
