Kelsey TS #21
Date/Time: February 14th, 3pm
Location: Hecht House basement
Topic/Skill: Fatimah and I worked on her research paper some more and went through the introduction she had created a rough draft for. We also went through potential articles for her to use and worked on her ability to understand and summarize the abstracts so that she could use them for her research paper.
Feedback provided to tutee: When we were revising her introduction paragraph, I made recommendations for alterations to sentences to fix the grammar and flow of the paragraph. I gave her tips for finding sources such as what kind of keywords to use when looking for sources, filtering the searches to include the full text, and how to skim to look for keywords and points the articles make. I recommended that she look for more of the facts and statistics to use for evidence to support her thesis rather than people's opinions. When she was reading the abstracts aloud, I corrected her pronunciation and explained what the more complicated terms meant specifically in the context of the article so that she could understand the point the article was trying to make.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Research papers can be a daunting task even when using one's own native language. I found it important to give the tutee permission to dismiss sources that look promising but are too hard for them to fully comprehend. I did also note that, if they do at least understand the general message and points of a source, it still may be acceptable and helpful to use. Being empathetic can be helpful for them when dealing with overwhelming tasks like research papers and it is important to include as much linguistic support as possible as that will help them work towards understanding the general message and points of a source.
