Lillie CO #4
Date/time: January 31, 2024. 1:00-1:50pm
Topic/skill: Olivia James, speaking class, group 3 level
Teacher presentation: The instructor begins class by passing out a 2.5-page text [the students had already read] based on a TED talk [the students had already seen]. In the meantime, one student summarizes the video & reading to his neighbor who had missed the previous class. Before playing the TED video, the instructor displays 6 discussion questions on her daily Google Doc schedule to get students thinking (would you be interested in… do you think that…how do… give specific examples of when… what does this mean for our kids?). She paused the video 3 times, in the 13-minute clip, to provide small clarifying details that may help students.
Classroom management: After the video, students brought their chairs into the middle of the room, forming a discussion circle (Olivia blatantly told them, “We are going to rearrange today, like a regular college discussion, our chairs in a circle”).
Student participation: Students gathered in a circle, discussing whether they would want such an invasive technology [as pitched in the TED talk].
Feedback provided: While they're talking, she takes notes on her rubric, jotting down details and notes.
Materials: projector, computer, TED Talk access, group discussion rubric
