Date & Time: 2/9/24, 12:30-1:30pm

Location: CIES Basement

Topic/Skill: During a CIES Mardi Gras celebration downstairs, Wei invited me to enjoy some cake and move our conversation hour from the classroom to the basement.

Feedback provided to the tutee: In our conversation, Wei was teaching me about her favorite holiday traditions and customs. Some of the words she got stuck on were poems, written by Chinese poets, with calligraphy brushes (She was telling me about Chinese characters historically being written in ink, not ballpoint pen. A Google search yielded the English equivalent to be calligraphy-based terms) – I helped her find the word and we pronounced it together until she knew how to say it. She also asked me how to say Syracuse [a grad program she applied to] and Instagram.

Lessons learned: During our conversation today, I actually learned a lot about the Chinese New Year. Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year, and Wei said that when we met today, it was around midnight in China, so the celebration was currently happening. She told me all about traditional food, games, and clothes associated with the new year.
